DALI+ carries DALI commands over wireless or IP-based networks. For a retrofit, the useful question is whether a proposed system can provide the required control without running a new control cable to every device.
Identify the proposed network
Ask which DALI+ implementation the supplier offers, which network it uses, and which devices are available for it. Do not assume that two products described as wireless DALI support the same transport or system architecture.
Compare wiring and maintenance
Wired DALI needs a control bus. A wireless approach changes the installation and commissioning work, but luminaires still need power. Include gateway locations, radio coverage, network setup, and future service access in the comparison.
Specify the control behavior first
List the required occupancy response, daylight dimming, manual overrides, schedules, and reporting. Review those functions against the project’s building requirements. A protocol name by itself does not establish compliance.
Check the complete device chain
Confirm driver, controller, sensor, and gateway models. Ask for the relevant certification records and supported functions. Record how the system behaves if the network, gateway, or internet connection is unavailable.
Trial the difficult part of the building
Use a representative area with the actual walls, metalwork, and mounting heights. Test commissioning, group changes, response time, and device replacement. A small demonstration on an open desk cannot establish coverage across a warehouse.
Include handover in the price
Request the device list, network design, configuration backup, administrator access, training, and support terms. Confirm which functions remain usable without a subscription and who is responsible for updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DALI+ the same as every wireless lighting system?
No. Check the implementation and certification of the actual products, including gateways and controllers.
Can wireless control remove all lighting wiring?
No. Fixtures still need power unless the specific device has another power source. The change concerns the control connection.
